Our club is a university recognized athletic club dedicated to learning, teaching, and competing in the sport of fencing. GoalsOur club's primary goal is to get people interested and excited about fencing. We welcome all students, staff and faculty interested in learning the sport of fencing to come to our practices. The club holds group beginner lessons at the beginning of every semester for those who have never participated in the sport previously. Of course, long-time fencers are happy to help anyone interested in learning the basics of the sport at any time. As a club, we work as a group for the betterment of individual members. Drills and exercises are designed to increase fencing skills, comraderie and overall fitness of our members. Competition While many members of the Appstate fencing club choose only to participate for recreation many choose to travel and compete. Thee event our members have participated in range from local event's hosted by us or other clubs in NC, SC, VA, or GA to North American Cups held all across the country. All members of the club are eligible to travel with us and represent Appalachian at these event. While we do not require competing, we strongly enourage it as a way spped up learning and meet other fencers outside our club. History The fencing team is the oldest athletic organization at Appalachian State having been founded in 1901, 2 years after the university was founded as the "Watauga Academy". Fencing was granted varsity status at Appalachian in 1941 but was reduced back to club level in 1977. Since that time the club has remained competitive due to the drive of it's senior students and a series of volunteer coaches. We strive to uphold the tradition of skill, honor and dedication of those who have come before us.
